Every Evo owner replaces a clutch at some stage. The stock Evo clutch was never designed to handle the increased power outputs of the modified cars and is totally inadequate for vehicles that are being repeatedly launched from a standing start.
The best advice we can give to customers when they need to replace a clutch is this:
‘Do it once - do it properly..!’
Fitting a cheap clutch is false economy. If you fit a clutch that is inappropriate for your modifications or your driving style you will inevitably end up destroying it in no time. You will then find yourself fitting a second one which will probably end up being be the one you should have fitted in the first instance..! Save yourself the trouble - fit the right clutch from the outset.
There are a huge number of clutches available for the Evo but they fit into roughly two categories: Single plates and multi plates. As the names suggest, single plates have a single drive plate and multi plates have more than one. As a general rule the more drive plates you have the more friction material you have and the stronger the clutch is. There are also a number of different friction materials available.
Single plate clutches are best suited to moderately modified cars and those which aren’t being repeatedly launched from a standing start. They are more cost effective and generally offer better drivability than the twin plates. Twin plate clutches are best suited to the more modified cars and those which are being repeatedly launched from a standing start. Hardwearing and strong, the twin plate clutches are extremely durable and can be somewhat more challenging to drive.
Clutches to be avoided, for an Evo that's driven every day, are solid type drive plates and 'puck type' clutches. These can be extremely challenging to drive and can judder violently on take up.
The good news is that we have done the testing for you and have a range of single and twin plate clutches available that we know work extremely well...
