Power Packages - T-Series: Evo VII - IX

What is a T-Series Power Pack..?

Tokyo Motorsports have developed a range of power upgrade kits for Evo 7, 8, 8MR & 9.The aim of the T-Series power packages is to bundle together all the parts needed to reach a specific power output while retaining the vehicles' emissions compliance. We have only used the highest quality components but have still retained excellent value for money. These packages represent some of the best 'bang for buck' available in Australia and are designed in stages, each building on the previous. Not only will these packs add power but they will also add value to your Evo. They are reliable and won't affect the normal drivability in any way whatsoever. We have done considerable amounts of research and development on these kits; we know they work, we know they're reliable and we know you'll be impressed with the results.

The Idea:

We wanted to take the guesswork out of modifying the Evo. All too often we see people who have modified their Evo but aren’t entirely satisfied with the result. The reasons were always the same; sometimes there’s a mismatch of parts, sometimes the modifications are being done in the wrong order and sometimes there is a key piece missing from the mod list.

Boost Control:

The method of boost control was considered and reconsidered before we finally arrived at the EVC-6. After weighing up the options we decided on the EVC-6 for a number of reasons: Firstly, it gives the driver a measure of control over the power output of his vehicle; unleashing almost 400bhp in wet or bad driving conditions is not for the faint hearted and is definitely not recommended for the inexperienced driver. Secondly, there is no boost gauge in the standard car (for reasons unknown). We consider the boost gauge function, with audible overboost warning, an important feature when the car has been modified and is running closer to its limits (The EVC even has a boost drop feature if the warning level is reached). Lastly, the boost controller adds value and extra functionality inside the cabin (which is important to some). The HKS EVC-6 fits the bill perfectly. We even supply it fitted on a custom made mount which fits neatly into the ashtray.

Different kits for different models:

It was clear from early in the development of these kits that the different models of Evo would give different results, and here's why:

The Evo VII and VIII-GSR share almost the exact same hardware, using the same turbo and the same cams, and therefore gave very similar results. The VIII-MR has the benefit of a larger turbine housing and different camshafts. This is why the stock VIII-MR, while giving the same peak power as a stock VIII-GSR, gives better mid range torque: 10NM more at the wheels than the stock VIII-GSR. Once the exhaust and air intakes are modified to be more free flowing these small changes make a big difference. The peak power is significantly higher (20atwkw) than that of the VIII-GSR with the exact same level of modifications. Peak torque is also 15NM higher at the wheels than that of the VIII-GSR with the exact same level of modifications. The Evo IX has the same larger turbine housing as the VIII-MR but also has a larger compressor housing and MIVEC on the inlet camshaft. We are able to maximise the benefit of the MIVEC by remapping it within the engine ECU which elevates the mid range torque considerably. The result is a small increase in peak power (5atwkw) over the VIII-MR, with the same level of modifications, but a very respectable 25NM gain at peak torque (at the wheels) compared with an VIII-MR with the same level of modifications.

Power Packages - TMX Series: Evo X.

What is a TMX power pack..?

Tokyo Motorsports have developed a range of power upgrade kits for the Evo X. Known as the ‘TMX Series’ these kits have been developed to target a specific power output. There are three levels of modification; TMX-320, TMX-360 and TMX-400. In each case the number refers to the power output of the engine in bhp (break horsepower).

The idea:

We wanted to take the guesswork out of modifying the Evo. The Evo X is a totally new model and shares very few components with its predecessors. New chassis, new engine, new transmission and new engine ECU meant that we had to start with a completely clean sheet with our power upgrade packages. The new engine (the aluminium 4B11) with its dual MIVEC and titanium turbine turbo afforded us with a much better starting point. The stock car was considerably more powerful than the earlier 4G63 and the overall result was much better with fewer parts.

Boost control:

The engine ECU on the X is much more advanced than that of the earlier models. Boost control, although tricky to set up initially, was found to be stable and could be relied upon to hold higher boost levels. Several configurations were considered for boost control but we settled upon ECU controlled boost with the addition of two important features; a modified boost tracking strategy, integral to the ECU, and an electronic map switching capability that allows the driver to switch between two pre-configured power settings.

Same kit for all models:

Each kit is compatible with all models of Evo X, whether you have a GSR, MR, SST or five speed manual. The manual transmission cars give marginally better power figures from what we have seen; the SST’s twin clutch being something of a limiting factor when it comes to torque. All of our research and development has been carried out on our own 2009 Model SST Evo X. Having a development car at our disposal has proven to be invaluable. Our development will continue and we will be incorporating the latest updates as they become available.
